Yoshihiro Togashi’s fifth volume of “YuYu Hakusho” is fantasy, adventure and death all wrapped up into one explosive tale. In this volume, Yusuke Urameshi and his team continue to fight their way through the Underworld against the Four Beasts.

When Urameshi starts to take on Suzaku, the leader of the Four Beasts, Suzaku throws a wrench in his plans and Keiko Yukimura and Botan, who are in the Earth realm, are subjected to unexpected horror. It’s up to Urameshi to ensure that he can break the leader’s spell before his friends back home are torn to shreds. But to do so, he needs to reach and bring out focus from inside that he’s never shown before.

The book certainly packs in the comedy, usually with bit gags or fairly lame jokes. However, every so often it can be appealing. Mostly, though, it’s too much — you can’t gloss over substance with patchwork.

The battle sequences are reminiscent of “Naruto,” as characters who drain their aura cannot fight as fully as those whose auras are still full. Still, the fighting parts are a big component of the volume, and certainly have a light-hearted approach, at least early on. The big battle at the end is full of twists and turns as one might expect of a battle with a leader.

Yet the characterization and development thereof is freely lacking. Ideally the fight sequences and gags would more than make up for the lack of characterization, but they don’t. That leaves “YuYu Hakusho” as little more than a few laughs and some interesting fight sequences.
