Yagyu Ninja Scrolls v1
Reviewed by Dan Polley

A rebellion is quashed in the opening pages of the new series by Futaro Yamada and Masaki Segawa, The Yagyu Ninja Scrolls.

As a result, members are taken hostage and paraded around 17th century feudal Japan. Those who stopped the rebellion have a surprise in store for their captives when they reach Tokeiji Temple, which is rumored to be the sanctuary for the wives, children and other women of those who participated in the attempted rebellion.

But the captors, the Aizu Seven Spears, knock down and force entry in the sanctuary and aren’t shy about letting mayhem loose and letting blood spill. Yet a mysterious visitor enters during the festivities and shocks all who are present with a secret that will change the lives of those who are looking to spill more blood.

And the survivors seek advice and training after they swear to seek revenge on the Aizu Seven Spears. That advice comes from outside the walls and the survivors are intrigued and angered with the help that is brought. But will that person’s help be enough to seek revenge for the previously committed atrocities?

The characters are great for such a time-piece manga. They all have their motivations — even if they are shallow and hollow — but strive to make sure those motivations are fulfilled. The introduction of Yagyu throws deeper elements into the storyline and really help set up the series.

The art is done devilishly well. All the pages and art have a matte-type finish, which breathes extra life into the pages and makes the characters come alive. One thing that this manga does especially well is designing the characters. Just through the designs you can clearly see who is to be trusted and who is not to be.

The Yagyu Ninja Scrolls is crisp and clean. Although it’s a bit difficult to understand all the threads in place at the beginning of the volume, they become crystal clear through the course of the art and story.
