Tail of the Moon v12
Reviewed by Ysabet Reinhardt MacFarlane

Volume 12 of Tail of the Moon covers a huge emotional spectrum for the characters, and finds them caught up in a historical real-world event that changes their lives. The story picks up as Usagi and Hanzo finally make it home to Iga and celebrate their wedding (on the evening of their arrival, much to their surprise). The joy of their homecoming is quickly overshadowed by an attack by the Oda Clan, however--despite the fact that Usagi and Hanzo had been informed that the attack was being called off, and that there would be peace between the two clans.

The rest of the volume deals with the attack and its aftermath, so I won't give away any more detail than that. As with volume 11, what strikes me most about this series (and again, I've only read these two volumes, so I assume I'm missing some nuances) is how straightforward the writing is, and how well that approach works in this case. The characters come across as open books, emotionally, which gives the series a stark, honest feel. I tend to prefer more complexity and layers, provided that they're handled well, but so many stories complicate things unnecessarily that this one is refreshing.

There are three volumes left to go, and this volume certainly reads like a story that's started building up to its ending, so it's been an interesting place to jump in. I have suspicions about what's going to happen next, and will be interested to see how accurate they turn out to be.

This volume includes two pages of cultural/translation notes.
