Reviewed by Dan Polley It’s a tale of a boy who has romantic feelings for two girls and finds himself stuck between the two. That’s how the sixth volume of Kouji Seo’s Suzuka starts out. Suzuka Asahina is the name of a track star whom Akitsuki Yamato really likes. However, he’s in a relationship with Honoka Sakurai, a typical girl next door. The volume starts with Suzuka and Yamato out together alone watching and hoping for some fireflies, which are a sight to be seen, Yamato says. However, the two enter into some banter that throws Yamato into uneasiness. Yamato is pretty naïve when it comes to relationships and the way he interacts with both Suzuka, who sometimes seems to flare into inner jealousy, and Honoka throughout the volume. Although his intentions may be in the correct place, he constantly finds that his ability to follow through on them is never up to par — for any of the females in his life. Things get really interesting when a drop-dead gorgeous woman enters the fray. She’s a childhood friend of Honoka and when Suzuka sees her and Yamato together, she assumes the worst and embarrassment is shared by all. The characters interact well with each other but Yamato seems a bit too stuck as a stereotyped character who is too short on self-confidence and lacks understanding of how to act around women. But the bright spot of the volume has to be Honoka’s friend, who sees right through Yamato and how he acts around all the women in his life. Yet she still does her best to help him through his tough times. The art is character-driven with minimal settings and backgrounds except for when they add to the story. One thing that was a bit of a hassle to get over in this volume is the word balloons. They are extremely vertical to fill the Japanese lettering, but in the English translation, some words end up spread over three lines, which gets annoying. At other times, the letters are shrunken in point size and it can be a bit harder too read. Suzuka is a love triangle that’s developing. Yamato and Honoka are establishing themselves in a relationship with each other and how the act and proceed from there propels the story.
