Hikari Hanazono was always the best at everything, especially wrestling, which she learned from her father. But when she was 6, she challenged a boy, who beat her quite easily. Now that she’s 15, she won’t stop until she’s better at everything than the boy. This is how Maki Minami starts the relationship tension in the first volume of SA.

SA stands for Special A, which is the top seven students of all of the grades at a special school. Hikari is ranked second at the school while the boy she challenged and lost to is ranked first. He’s Kei Takishima and no matter what he and Hikari compete at, he always comes out ahead.

It’s Hikari’s dream to never stop working hard and studying in order to beat her. But with exams right around the corner, Hikari needs to hit the books if she wants to score better than Kei, whose memory is as accurate as it is instantaneous. But Hikari finds some other students who have the answers to the exam and are cheating to get ahead of the Special A students. Hikari says they need to work hard to beat the Special A students and Kei shows up and says that at least he can respect Hikari, because at least she works hard for her achievements.

It’s quite clear from the start that Kei has some sort of hidden feelings for Hikari, even though she’s none the wiser for it. She continues to try to beat Kei in any way, which often leads to Kei subtly confessing his feelings for her, but in a more angry and heavy-handed way.

The art is simple and focused on the characters most of the time, but does have intricate details in the settings every now and then. Kei is established not only as the premier student, but also as the most attractive one, too.

SA is fun and the romance is sure to hit soon. For now, the mostly playful interaction between Hikari and Kei is delightful and is enough for this volume.
