MBQ v1 (2)
Reviewed by Quita Paul

I have enjoyed my share of manga; but nothing compares to the world of MBQ. After winning second place in the annual Tokyopop’s “Rising Stars of Manga” contest, creator Felipe Smith now has a new comic book series. There are a lot of themes that I can relate to in MBQ. We begin our tale with Omario, a struggling comic book artist who seeks the paranormal. He doesn’t want to draw the “oh so typical” superhero, or zombies - he wants to start his own genre. The only problem is, he needs to pay the bills. Sometimes in life, we have to sell our soul even though we may not agree with it.

This tale has nothing to do with drama. It is all about the world that Omario lives in, the place that very few seem to go. But, one thing is for sure - every page is a shock in itself. Brian blends at karaoke; Dee is getting money from the underworld - everyone is trying to get somewhere in life: some get it, some don’t.

Overall, I loved MBQ, as it reminded me of the “street-style” views of Megatokyo. Each character is not a remake of a prior person, more of a transformation, a blending, of comedy and human thought. Anyone who reads this will reflect upon their minds, their own life: anything is possible; all you have to do is set your mind to it.

If you liked manga like Confidential Confessionals, Megatokyo, or GTO, MBQ is in a league of its own.
