Gacha Gacha The Next Revolution v4
Reviewed by Dan Polley

You can’t fault Hiroyuki Tamakoshi’s “Gacha Gacha: The Next Revolution” for not having an interesting premise. Indeed, anytime Akira Hatsushiba sneezes, he turns into a girl.

It provides for some comedic situations in which Akira, as a girl, is able to befriend and get closer to Yurika, a girl Akira (the boy) has a crush on. Some of the sequences and set ups seem forced as Akira (as either gender) is thrown into a situation in which he sneezes, transforming to the opposite gender. Although some of the comedic sequences that follow can be genuinely funny, most of the time it comes off as completely passé.

Although it’s often presented in a crude fashion, it’s interesting and refreshing to see a teenage relationship in a manga that does have a bit more of a sexual edge to it. However, it’s unfortunate that that sort of relationship is overshadowed by the blatant over-sexual imagery presented in the volume.

There aren’t any nude imagery, but there are sequences that include Yurika grabbing Akira’s (the girl) breasts and other comedic sexual references that seem appropriate only for an adolescent audience. The volume is rife with sexual tension. The imagery might not be explicit, but it does tend to venture into the risqué.

One thing that does work in the volume is the art, which serves well to enhance the teenaged anxiousness feelings that permeate throughout the plot. But, during some of the sexually intoned passages, the art serves only to fulfill cheap comedic gags.

“Gacha Gacha: The Next Revolution” is simply about cheap laughs and over-sexualized characters. Although the volume doesn’t contain any explicit imagery, it doesn’t do much to make the plot interesting. The only things that make this volume worth reading are the premise and some of the art, which enhances the sexualized storyline.
