Fullmetal Alchemist v14
Reviewed by Lori Henderson

Ed and Al come face to face with the “father” of the homunculi, who just so happens to be a dead ringer for their own father, Van Hohenheim—a resemblance too uncanny for coincidence. And later, when the allure of immortality proves to be too much for Prince Lin of Xin, he lets Greed take over…literally!

Fullmetal Alchemist is a title that received a lot of hype, and has totally lived up to it. With more fighting and revelations, this series still ‘wows’ as much at volume 14 as it did at volume 1.

Picking up right where the last volume left off, Ed, Al, and Lin end up in the homunculi’s lair, where they meet “Father”, the creator of the homunculi. But, as they talk to him, he raises more questions and gives no answers. All they know for sure, is that he has a plan, and they are meant to be a part of it. Lin also becomes involved when he is given the philosopher’s stone for Greed, and Lin accepts him, but we are left wondering who’s really in charge? And the final page of the last chapter leaves us wondering about Lt. Hawkeye.

This volume is a perfect example of why I love this series so much. The action, mystery, drama and humor are all combined masterfully to create a compelling story. Even in the middle of a fight, Arakawa-sensei still finds ways to inject some humor (mostly at Ed’s expense). To see Ed try so hard to do the right thing, and leave the military, only to be blackmailed into staying for Winry’s safety, really makes you feel for him. And even if it seems the brothers have taken a step forward in finding a way to reverse their mistakes, the goal itself still looks miles away. This volume was very entertaining, and I really didn’t want to put it down until the end. It was *that* engrossing to me. And that’s the way a story should be. Arakawa-sensei’s extras at the end were great too, as always. The sound effect change was just hilarious, and there’s a very cute short story at the end.

A strong story and great characters keeps this title a top performer and a great read!
