Reviewed by Quita Paul What do you get when rock merges with the boredom of life? 14 year-old Yukio Tonaka is one heck of a boring guy. Not only does he have weak tastes in music, but a small vestige in personality. His shy and often blunt personality makes him a target of his worst enemy! Little did he know that his short encounter with 16 year-old rocker Ryusuke Minomi would have such an effect. Ryusuke has just returned to Japan from America. He wants to create the band of his dreams. Does Yukio have what it takes to enter the world of Rock n’ Roll dreams? Beck really caught my eye into the sensationalism of the rock music world. We all want to be on the top, but in order to get there you must work hard and regain your efforts. All of the characters really show the process of being poor and having nothing to making something for yourself. Unlike in most mangas, where the American character is seemed to be happy and joyful. Beck was the complete opposite, they where bilingual and embrace Japanese culture instead of insulting it. I highly recommend this series, especially if you enjoy J-pop and J-rock music. If you like FLCL and rock music tickles your fancy, then Beck volume one will hit the spot for you! Interested in writing for MangaLife?
