Reviewed by Dan Polley The fifth volume of Oh! Great’s “Air Gear” continues to build upon the mythos of the Air Gear universe and continues to enhance the characterizations of the personalities within the manga’s pages. In this volume, Ikki sets forth to build his own Air Gear army. And at first, things don’t go so great for Ikki and his friends. One of Ikki’s friends, Kazu, is offered a chance to be the head of the Eastside Guns, the Air Gear team that rules Ikki’s high school. When Kazu’s personality is questioned, will it encourage him to leave Ikki’s team behind? Yet that’s not the only excitement in the volume. Ikki and his team also face their first turf challenge. And after an early defeat of the best-of-five challenge, it seems as though Ikki and his team will have to disband before they have an opportunity to display their true skills. But the volume is perhaps at its best in its character development. Ikki’s character is fleshed out a bit more, as is Kazu’s during the Eastside Guns sub-plot. But it’s the women of “Air Gear” who get the most characterization in this volume, and it’s humanizing and wonderful to see those sides of those characters. The art is again at its best during the action sequences. The lines and angles of the characters helps to propel the plot along during those action sequences. “Air Gear” continues on its magnificent ways and actually manages to improve since the last volume thanks to the increased role of characterization played in this volume.
