Manga Bulletin: May 28, 2008 Written by Park Cooper
Hello, Park Cooper here, and welcome once again to Manga Bulletin, a newish feature in which, among other things, ML will give you the manga/anime/industry news of the week and comment on it, perhaps snarkily (perhaps not). Indeed it’ll be a place for all sorts of shameless plugging, but let’s jump right into things with some professionals of hype with the newest press release I’ve gotten from Viz:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE VIZ MEDIA ANNOUNCES DVD RELEASE OF POKÉMON: THE RISE OF DARKRAI Latest Feature Film From Iconic Children’s Property Offers Exciting New Adventure Featuring Popular “Diamond and Pearl” Characters Dialga and Palkia, Also Introducing the Mysterious Darkrai San Francisco, CA, May 27 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry's most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, has announced the DVD release of the latest Pokémon movie – Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai to hit store shelves today and will carry an SRP of $19.98. Pokémon remains one of the most successful children's properties worldwide, generating billions in global sales to date. In North America the Pokémon television series airs seven days a week on Cartoon Network and the property continues to be one of the network’s top ranked programs in all key demographics. Pokémon is also the top-ranked show on Toonami JetstreamT, an online service developed jointly by Cartoon Network and VIZ Media that allows users to watch streamed episodes from several of the network’s hit series. In Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai, young hero Ash may think he's seen everything when it comes to Pokémon, but is he ready to face the mysterious Darkrai in his latest awesome adventure? While touring Alamos Town - home of the Space-Time Tower - with the beautiful Alice, Ash and his friends discover that the town's special garden has been decimated! Baron Alberto, a dashing but arrogant fellow, immediately blames the destruction on Darkrai. As if it just overheard the accusation, Darkrai appears and confronts our heroes! Who is Darkrai? Is it a friend... or an enemy in disguise? And as a battle between Legendary Pokémon Dialga and Palkia rages directly above Alamos Town, and threatens to tear a hole in the space-time continuum, will Ash and his friends survive this showdown and learn Darkrai's true nature? “Pokémon continues to be a cornerstone of VIZ Media’s catalog of unique children’s titles and we’re extremely pleased to announce the DVD release of this latest feature film, Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai,” says Mark Chang, Director, Product Marketing, VIZ Media. “For more than a decade, Pokémon has captivated millions of kids with positive messages about cooperation and friendship. VIZ Media was one of the first companies to bring Pokémon home videos and DVDs to a domestic audience and in coming months we plan on releasing a variety of new Pokémon DVDs, manga and puzzle books and we look forward to fans catching them all!”
I personally drew a blank on what to say about this, so I threw it up for grabs to the ML staffers: David Rasmussen, got anything to say about this one?
David Rasmussen: No, not really.
How about “Don't mock the living impaired”? (since Poke'mon's movie franchise is, at this point, a living impaired series of movies that should have been buried once the WB lost interest in releasing said movies).
Poke'mon hasn't been the same as a movie franchise since years and years ago when Poke'mon the Third Movie came out and the franchise went downhill from there. The WB gave up the franchise to Disney after the Third Movie's failing in the box office, then Disney gave up trying to keep it in theatrical releases a few movies later (two to be precise) and now somebody else has the rights to it and... well, if there was a franchise that is the Anime version of the undead this is one of those franchises.
The only thing worth talking about with Poke'mon these days is Magical Poke'mon Journey (VIZ), and the Nintendo DS franchise of Poke'mon games including Diamond/Pearl and the recent Darkness/Time release (which you play as a Poke'mon instead of a trainer).
...
Sounds like you know way more about it than do I, David. Alethea and Athena Nibley? You got anything?
Nibleys: Sadly, we stopped following Pokemon too long ago to come up with any comments on that, but we do have a couple of press releases from AX we can comment on if you want to use them! From www.anime-expo.org
... Yes, I totally want that. Proceed.

Alethea: We would die of happiness, but then we wouldn't get to go meet him! This is crazy awesome! He's probably our favoritest seiyuu they've gotten so far. We actually already own stuff we want him to sign! And the best part is we already have costumes from our favorite things he's in! This is extremely happy, because we like to dress up for our favorite guests, and we're so super super busy that I don't know if I'll have time to make new costumes. So much yayness. (If anyone would like us to write a column about Toshihiko Seki, go on over to our handy-dandy forums and leave a comment!)

Alethea: When we were watching a street show at Tokyo Disneysea, a couple of women stood next to us, and one of them kind of looked like Ms. Ishida, but I only saw her from the side and I couldn't tell for sure. If we run into her at AX and she says, "Hey, were you at Disneysea in May?" then we'll know. I don't know; she might recognize us.
Athena: We love her concerts, though. We usually get bored at concerts easily, but we can watch hers.

Also-- you said that we should say when this happens-- two manga volumes we’ve worked on have just come out: Hockey Club 5 and minima! 2!
Hockey Club 5: Fun with dialects! There's somebody with a different dialect in almost every chapter of this one, so we tried to be creative and use different ones. And, to be honest, there's not really such thing as "pirate speech" in Japanese (as far as we know), so even though the pirates don't have a different Japanese dialect, we tried to make them "talk like pirates" anyway. Hopefully we succeeded.
minima! 2: Volume two of the second series we translate for Del Rey. I'm not entirely convinced that Nicori is really a meerkat, but we take the little details, and put them to the side. This volume features Nicori and Midori as action stars! Well, not like they're in a movie or anything, but they do actiony type things. Check it out!
... Thanks, Nibleys.
EiC’s Note: minima! is also a series that I (Park Cooper) and my wife (Barbara) have recently started editing. So please enjoy it, and please look forward to next time.
