Manga Bulletin: July 2nd, 2008
Written by Park Cooper

Hello, Park Cooper here, and welcome once again to Manga Bulletin, in which, among other things, ML will give you the manga/anime/industry news of the week and comment on it, perhaps snarkily (perhaps not). Indeed it’ll be a place for all sorts of shameless plugging, but let’s jump right into things with some professionals of hype with the newest press release I’ve gotten from...

Funimation?

Woo-hoo! Someone besides Viz sent me some PR! (Barbara: “But I like Viz...”)

That’s right, it’s time for David Rasmussen’s SCORN OF THE WEEK, where MangaLife staffer David Rasmussen scorns the press releases I show my staffers, hoping one of them might have a kind word. Rowan and Martin had the Fickle Finger of Fate Award; we have this guy. And now for this week’s SCORN OF THE WEEK:

Hell Girl

IFC VOD Exclusive Premiere on Thursday, July 3

Network Television Premiere on Friday, October 3

Official Web Site: http://www.funimation.com/hellgirl/

IFC brings all 26 episodes of the popular anime supernatural thriller series HELL GIRL from Aniplex as a television exclusive available on IFC FREE, the IFC VOD channel, starting July 3 with the network television premiere to follow later in the year on Friday, October 3 on IFC.

Beyond the veil of midnight lies a website, HellCorrespondence.com. Type in the name of one upon which you desire retribution… And it will be served.

If you truly desire to take revenge upon those who have wronged you, just untie the scarlet thread from the totem’s neck. Pulling this thread will bind you into a covenant with Ai Enma, who will ferry the soul of your tormentor straight into the depths of Hell. However, once vengeance has been served, you will have to deliver on your end of the bargain. There always has to be a price to pay. When you die, your soul will also belong to Hell. You will never know the joys of Heaven. The decision rests with you.

David Rasmussen:
Page me when somebody gets the rights for Aria the Animation and Aria the Natural (Aria the Animation Season 2).

There you go, folks, that’s it for David Rasmussen’s SCORN OF THE WEEK. The SCORN OF THE WEEK is brought to you by David-ade, the nutrient-rich, electrolyte-replenishing sports drink that keeps David Rasmussen scorning hype of all kinds even in global-warming’s 100+ degree heat. David-ade!

Barbara Lien-Cooper: DANG it! I don’t GET IFC Video On Demand! And I bet they have some good Asian Horror maybe! NO FAIR!

But wait there’s more! That’s right, it’s time for PROFILES IN WEBCOMICS. This week, we hear from the creators of the comic Strays, found at http://www.straysonline.com/

Samantha Whitten:

Your name, your comic's title, and what your comic's about:
--Samantha Whitten, Strays, and it's about a loud mouth girl who teams up with a mute bounty hunter and their adventures together.

What was the first anime you ever watched?
--My first "real" taste of anime was The Slayers.

What was the first manga you ever read?
--The Pokemon Manga by Toshihiro Ono

Do you consider your comic to be manga?
--I would say it's more "manga influenced" than manga. It does not read from right to left nor follow most standard manga practices. We're also not Japanese and don't pretend to be, haha.

What is your favorite anime?
--Cardcaptor Sakura (the original Japanese version)

What is your favorite webcomic besides your own?
--Probably Sabrina Online. I've enjoyed it for many years now.

--What was the last manga you read (and was it any good)?
I'm currently keeping up with Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, and yes, it's very good. It's my absolute favorite manga.

--What was the last anime you watched (and was it any good)?
Ouran High School Host Club, and once again yes, very good.

What is your definition of manga? How is manga different from western comic books?
--To me true manga is first and foremost authentic Japanese. It also usually has certain quirks and styles. It's hard to describe how manga differs from western comic books other than reading from right to left and having different visual traits. I suppose you usually won't see "chibi", "super deformed" or any sort of extremely exaggerated drawn characters in western comics.

What are your current influences?
--Everything!

What are your current favorite websites?
--I spend a lot of time on deviantART (www.deviantart.com) and Gaia Online (www.gaiaonline.com)

What's your favorite movie, novel, and TV show?
--My favorite movie is The Lion King, my favorite novel is Watership Down and my favorite TV show is currently Eli Stone.

What was the path that led you to creating your comic?
--Actually I've always wanted to do one. The desire started out as wanting to do a standard newspaper variety comic, but I never had the drive or motivation to keep one going until now. Since my interests have now changed to anime and manga I decided to use graphic novel format.

Tell us about your background.
--There isn't much that's interesting to tell. I've been drawing ever since I learned to use a pencil and I'm afraid I don't have any special or unique education in art, only a standard high school diploma. I'm currently working as a freelance artist and decided to create a web comic to help me learn and grow.

Stacey 'Algy' Pefferkorn:

Your name, your comic's title, and what your comic's about:

Stacey 'Algy' Pefferkorn. Strays is the title of our webcomic. It is set in a fantasy world and about Meela, a scrawny loud mouth of a girl who surprisingly teams up with Feral, a mute bounty hunter. With an odd duo like this, an assortment of fun and danger lies ahead in their adventures!

What was the first anime you ever watched?

Sailor Moon! Followed By Dragon Ball Z.

What was the first manga you ever read?

Oh gosh, I can't really remember.

Do you consider your comic to be manga?

Nope, just manga-influenced.

What is your favorite anime?

I have too many to name, but to name a few: Sword of the Stranger, FullMetal Alchemist, Rurouni Kenshin, Blue Seed, Sailor Moon, Outlaw Star, Wolf's Rain..

What is your favorite webcomic besides your own?

VG Cats, Fantasy Realms.

What was the last manga you read (and was it any good)?

Peace Maker. I love it and want to read more!

What was the last anime you watched (and was it any good)?

Sword of the Stranger (movie). Holy W#$@FSDF I HIGHLY recommend it!! Such flawless animation! I expected nothing lets from BONES!

What is your definition of manga? How is manga different from western comic books?

Manga is the Japanese form of a comic. It is read from right to left and has a unique style to the artwork. Although I do like that "manga" sounds better than "comic/comicbook," personally I really would not like to find myself calling any of my personal works a manga, simply for the fact that I am not from Japan.

What are your current influences?

My life and experiences. My bestest best friend Celesse and several other amazing artists out there.

What are your current favorite websites?

deviantArt, Windstone Editions, Gaiaonline, Astronomy, CNN, MSNBC...

What's your favorite movie, novel, and TV show?

Movie- Aliens. As far as Novels go, I can say I like the authors Dean Koontz, James Patterson, J.R.R Tolkien, and C.S. Lewis. Tv Show? Jeopardy!

What was the path that led you to creating your comic?

Algy: To have fun and be able to tell a story. Strays is our first and so far has been a great learning experience of what it takes to be a comic artist.

Tell us about your background.

I discovered Anime, like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, about 1997-1998 and was well into both. I did the whole fanart thing and oogled over Bejita (or Vegeta) for a while like most probably did. When I got my own computer, I began meeting a few wonderful people online in paintchats around 2000 and we grew closer over the next few years. My style changed rather quickly with the influence of my friends and my drive to get better, creating several characters, thinking up stories and eventually starting to write a few. While Anime-styled art is practically my main artwork, I still love to do other kinds of fantasy, like dragons or unicorns/pegasi, and wildlife. My job at an art supply store lets me meet amazing artists every day (even if they don't have the same interests, it's always nice to explore) and that has given me the chance to meet other fellow artists that love anime or are on deviantArt too. As of today, I still draw/paint and hope to continue doing so. :)

Okay, let’s finish up this week with What We’re Reading:

Alethea and Athena Nibley:

What we’re reading:

Together:
--Nabari no Ou v.4 – thumbs up
--Negima various – thumbs up

Athena:
--Momogumi+ Senki v.1 – thumbs up

Alethea:
--Hoshi wa Utau v.2 – thumbs up

What we’re watching:
--Hare + Guu disc 3 – thumbs up
--Haruka: Beyond the Stream of Time disc 3 – thumbs up
--Tower of Druaga episode 12 – thumbs up

What we’re playing:
--Mario Party DS - thumbs up

What we worked on that’s out this week:
--Kamichama Karin chu v.1 – thumbs up! We were really excited to get to work on this, because, to be honest, we like magical girl titles. Well, mostly we like the ones we think are good, and this falls into that category. It was a new challenge translating the character Michiru, who’s from England, because we wanted to make him talk more like an English person than an American one. I hope we succeeded…

...
And Barb and I edited it, too. And so I can attest that the twins do indeed love them some Michiru.

Okay, that’s all for this week’s Manga Bulletin—please look forward to next time...
