Pros:If you're used to Photoshop eating up your system resources, Comicworks will be a welcome change. Not only has the program never crashed on me, but you can work at up to 1200 dpi black and white with little to no slowdown. The program offers various page sizes, from A5 to B4, and gives the choice of typical manga paper with blue grid-line markings, or the blank pages with removable blue grids. In any case, it's a simple-to-use program - just about anybody can pick up the basics in about half an hour. And yes, it has a layering function. Not much different to most other graphics programs, but with added benefits of "inverting" layers. Layers can be turned white if the lower layer is dark, or turned black if vice versa. It also allows a special function where the layer turns itself either black or white depending on the layer underneath. A useful function, and demonstrative of how Comicworks was especially created for manga creation. Tired of doing speedlines? A variety of speedline functions are available, as are rulers and french curves to help draw the more difficult curves. Then there's the tones. The program has a set of over 200 tones to choose from, pretty much the reason why most people will buy Comicworks in the first place. I won't go into detail about the tones available, except that they are a varied bunch and adequate for what most people are doing. As far as black and white toning goes, Comicworks is worth it's money already. But the best thing about Comicworks has to be its inking feature. It has inking tools that create beautiful, smooth lines... if you have a tablet and can use it properly. A mouse is utterly worthless. In any case, it is Comicwork's inking that elevates it above other graphics program - largely because it is so dedicated and so easy to configure. If you're into digital inking (which I'm not), you'll find Comicworks a happy edition to your software library. It even has a feature that allows you to swivel the page around while you ink. Verdict: Great inking tool and great selection of tones. Some dedicated manga-production features that can only come with programs like this. |
